U.S. auto sales have risen sharply over the past year for many models as the auto industry continues to recover from supply chain issues.
According to relevant media statistics, U.S. auto sales data for 2023 tracked several different storylines. Many auto sales arcs are upward: Sales are up strongly, thanks in large part to automakers building inventories. As supply chain issues continue to ease, many automakers are finally able to produce more vehicles to meet demand. It wasn't all plain sailing, as Stellantis didn't quite keep up with the previous year's sales pace, but the other major players - namely Ford, General Motors, Toyota and Honda - all saw increases compared to 2022. We ranked the top 25 best-selling models by sales. Interestingly, it’s not just SUVs and trucks that are experiencing significant sales growth, but other vehicle models as well. Even many sedans made an appearance and took up a large part of the list.
25. Ford Escape (140,968 units sold)
Ford more mainstream compact SUV still manages to make it onto the best-seller list, although the more rugged-looking Bronco Sport follows closely behind. The Escape has been updated for the 2023 model year but still offers the same non-hybrid, hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrain options as before.
24. Subaru Forester (152,566 units sold)
The Forester may not sell as well as the Outbac and Crosstrek, but considering this is the last year of the current generation, it still performs respectably. The new 2025 Forester has already been announced, but the outgoing model still represents a 34% increase compared to the 2022 model.
23. Mazda CX-5 (153,808 units sold)
The CX-5 compact SUV has long been Mazda's best-selling model, with sales rising just 2% compared with 2022.
22. Jeep Wrangler (156,581 units sold)
Compared with 2022, Wrangler sales dropped significantly by 14%. New 2024 models arriving later this year may boost sales in 2024, but the Wrangler and the entire Jeep brand may face increasing competition from rivals.
21. Subaru Crosstrek (159,193 units sold)
Crosstrek sales are up 3% over 2022, with a refresh for the 2024 model year. The new car has been improved in many aspects, but the starting price is the same as the 2023 model.
20. Subaru Outback (161,814 units sold)
The Outback received a minor refresh for the 2023 model year, and the all-wheel-drive wagon continues to go strong for the 2024 model year. Its sales rose 10 percent, making it the best-selling Subaru model of the year, beating out the smaller Crosstrek, which also made the list.
19. Toyota Highlander (169,543 units sold)
Sales of the three-row Highlander SUV fell 24% compared with 2022. We attribute much of the decline to the arrival of the new, larger Grand Highlander, which has achieved sales of 48,036 units in just a few months and is sure to continue cannibalizing sales, with 2024 set to be the standard-setting Highlander. based on sales volume.
18. Ford Explorer (186,799 units sold)
The Explorer has had a lot of ups and downs this year, but sales are down 10% in 2023. Even so, it beat the Toyota Highlander in the three-row SUV sales race.
17. Honda Accord (197,947 units sold)
The Accord's successful redesign for 2023, coupled with increasing inventory levels, should help boost its sales in 2023. Compared with weak results in 2022, sales increased by 28%. But its sales were surpassed by the smaller Civic and its main rival, the Toyota Camry.
16. Honda Civic (200,381 units sold)
Honda said it has significantly more inventory in 2023 than in 2022, helping sales of its Civic range of compact sedans and hatchbacks surge 50% from the previous year.
15. Hyundai Tucson (209,624 units sold)
Hyundai is setting sales records of its own these days, led by the company's Tucson compact SUV. Compared with last year, its sales increased by 20%.
14. Chevrolet Equinox (212,701 units sold)
The Equinox isn't the newest compact crossover on the market, and it lags a bit behind its competitors in terms of sales. While the Honda CR-V and Nissan Rogue both saw significant sales growth, Equinox sales were flat for the year.
13. Toyota Corolla (232,370 units sold)
Corolla sales were up nearly 5% from 2022, meaning it maintains its high position on this list. That's noteworthy in 2023, as few compact cars rank among America's best-sellers, and Toyota also finished the year well ahead of its closest rival, the Honda Civic.
12. Tesla Model 3 (estimated sales: 232,700 units)
Tesla had a banner year, with the Model 3 sedan and Model Y crossover accounting for the vast majority of deliveries. But, as always, the numbers here are just Automotive News' estimates, as the company itself doesn't break down its sales by region or model.
11. Toyota Tacoma (234,768 units sold)
2023 Tacoma Sales Down 1% Many Tacoma loyalists are probably waiting for the new model to arrive in 2024, and considering it easily outperformed the old model in our testing, we can see why.
10. Jeep Grand Cherokee (244,595 units sold)
The Grand Cherokee was one of several Stellantis models to see sales decline earlier this year. But a strong second half of the year helped the midsize SUV gain 10% compared with 2022.
9. Nissan Rogue (271,458 units sold)
Similar to some competitors, the Rogue has seen significant sales growth this year, up 46% from 2022. That also includes some sales of the Rogue Sport subcompact crossover, which is no longer in production and will gradually disappear from sales reports.
8. Toyota Camry (290,649 units sold)
We think hell will freeze over before the Toyota Camry gives up its spot as America's best-selling non-SUV. Its sales were down 2% compared with 2022, but it still maintained its position, even surpassing the Nissan Rogue.
7. GMC Sierra (295,737 units sold)
The Sierra is the mechanical twin of the Chevy Silverado, and both the full-size pickup truck and its heavy-duty sibling have been strong this year. This represents an overall increase of 22% compared to the previous year.
6. Honda CR-V (361,457 units sold)
Limited supply in 2022 severely hindered CR-V deliveries, and sales increased by 52% in 2023. But its results are still far behind the Toyota RAV4. We'll see if it can pick up more slack in 2024.
5. Tesla Model Y (394,593 units sold)
Model Y has had a great year. In the sales race, it trails only the RAV4 and the three major full-size pickup trucks, a surprising result since it and the Tesla Model 3 are the only all-electric vehicles on this list.
4. Toyota RAV4 (434,943 units sold)
The RAV4 once again retains its crown as the best-selling SUV in the United States. It has had a strong year, up 9% from an already strong performance in 2022.
3. Ram Pickup (444,926 units sold)
Like many other Stellantis models, the Ram truck lineup has been reduced. Its 5% decline means it's far behind the second-place Silverado this year. The updated 2025 models will be available in dealers soon, which may lead to a significant increase in sales.
2. Chevrolet Silverado (543,319 units sold)
Silverado sales include the light-duty 1500 model and the heavy-duty series. HD truck sales are roughly flat this year, but Silverado 1500 sales are up from last year.
1. Ford F-Series (750,789 units sold)
Ford pickup truck once again ranked first, with a 15% increase compared with 2022. Of those, 24,165 were electric F-150 Lightning pickup trucks.
