Magna Steyr, based in Graz, Austria, is the world’s largest manufacturer of vehicles for other companies, boasting an impressive capacity to produce 200,000 vehicles annually. Over its 120-year history, the company has assembled four million vehicles for 11 different clients, including high-profile models like the Jaguar I-Pace, Aston Martin Rapide, and Mini Countryman. More recently, it has also produced the Toyota Supra and BMW Z4 since 2018.
This week, Automotive News focused on the challenges faced by Fisker, the electric vehicle manufacturer that has partnered with Magna Steyr for the Fisker Ocean SUV. According to a statement from Fisker, the Austrian division has been grappling with operational and financial difficulties, leading to a bankruptcy filing and the cancellation of its contract with Magna Steyr. This situation has resulted in Magna Steyr laying off 500 employees, as contracts for producing the BMW 5-Series and several Jaguar models also come into question.
While Fisker’s struggles are not new, a significant detail emerged in the Automotive News article: production of the BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra, which share a platform, is set to conclude in 2026. Reports suggest that Z4 production will cease in March of that year, aligning with the expected end of the Supra's production, given that the GR Supra essentially mirrors the Z4 in design and mechanics, including the engine and transmission sourced from BMW. This marks a notable loss, especially as the Supra is one of the few remaining performance vehicles available with a manual transmission. The 2025 Z4 will also feature a manual option.
Sales figures for the Supra reveal a steep decline; after peaking at 6,830 units in 2021, U.S. sales plummeted to 2,652 units last year—a 46% drop. As of April, sales were down another 29%, totaling just 817 vehicles. Since its launch in 2019, the Supra has sold only 24,022 units in the U.S., which is comparable to the sales volume of a strong month for the Corolla.
Despite Toyota’s vast resources, the likelihood of a sixth-generation Supra seems slim, especially in light of the fifth-generation model’s disappointing sales. Toyota has remained tight-lipped about future product plans, with Senior Analyst Breanne McCallop stating, “We cannot comment on future products.”
For those interested in acquiring a Supra or Z4, it may be wise to act quickly.
Here I strongly recommend two Toyota GR Supra taillights:
